BBC News Caption Cock-up

Accusation

Picture the scene; it’s the 10 o’clock news on the BBC on 8th of September. The report is on “International Burn-a-Koran Day”. It tells of the US pastor Terry Jones’ intention to burn the Koran on 9th of September to serve as a reminder of 9/11.

A bold choice of protest you may think.

Not as bold as the BBC’s #FAIL when the article cut to the video interview of Pastor Terry Jones who had been captioned as Mohamed Rifaah from Al Azhar University. OOPS!

Recommendation

Timing is everything, proofing in time is critical and so might be the position of the caption writer.

  • Koran is not even the ‘correct’ spelling

  • Another #fail on spelling = #skelptare x 2

  • His face looks like a well skelpt arse. Hope he enjoys fire, he is going to be seeing a lot of it in the afterlife.

What is Skelpt Arse?

To use a splendid bit of sadly, now seldom-used Scottish vernacular, whose 'arse' definitely needs 'skelpt'?

Who or what has been letting you down, letting our magnificent country down or who generally needs brought into line. Politicians? Overly politically-correct-mandarins? Jobsworth civil-servants? Service industry specialists who've not been servicing? You tell us!

We've got a sliding scale of 'skelpitness' from a light smack or a pure, red, stinger? You decide!
