Don’t Mess in Glasgow
Accusation
We have been in Glasgow nearly 10 years and NO, we have not gotten used to the filth on the streets. The times when I was walking along the streets with my head in the clouds – will they ever come back? Not without dog shit on your shoes.
We are silent warriors who often go on Sunday country walks armed with 2 big bin bags. Our 4 yr old was even shocked and had to give up attempting to clean up this wonderful beach in Ayr as the Council bins were overflowing.
I could not take my parents to Ayr beach for a nice walk, I would end up apologising and we would have to turn on our heel and leave! All this just before the Easter holidays start when people expect tourism to start up. Tourism = revenue!
No self respecting traveller would come back – it’s a health hazard and no fun! Dog mess (bagged and un-bagged), wrappers of all sorts, ice cream on the play park slide… Not to mention the public toilets! Parents witnessing their kids dumping garbage and not saying a word!
What has this world come to??? Is their No pride? No ownership? No manners? How are we raising this nation? It has to stop and it can.
Recommendation
When the 2014 Commonwealth Games are held in Glasgow the world will be shocked at the filth. We have to start re-educate Glasgow and Scotland now.
There are littering laws but the fines and penalties are too small. We now need to step up and think outside the box. In Ireland litterers are fined up to 2000Euro , in Germany 200Euro on the spot – if you can’t pay you go to the police station, if you can still not pay you do community hours cleaning along side the professionals, wearing a t-shirt that says “Who litters can clean”.
Look at other countries and become creative.
Why do environmental workers like street cleaners, bin men, even traffic wardens not have the power to issue fines? These on the spot fines could finance more staff for the cleaning up crews.
Make schools more aware of the issues and breed pride, ownership and manners back into Scotland!!!
Representation
Come on Glasgow City Council and the rest of Scotland sort it out!
People of Glasgow it’s time to speak up!
Budget cuts are NOT the issue here, this idea finances itself.

Disgusting behaviour, probably boys that do it…
For the past few weekends I’ve been helping out at the annual river clean up along the Kelvin – http://www.fork.org.uk/ The amount of crap that we’ve found is disgusting – microwaves, crowbars, hammers, bikes and bags and bags of cheap cider bottles.
Last weekend I was at Loch Lomond. The rubbish (discarded tents, sleeping bags, bottles, plastic bags, bbqs) was a depressing sight. Welcome to Bonnie Scotland! http://ow.ly/i/ayBV
Couldn’t agree more!
?
And we surely need to BE the change we wish to see in our community … I do “rubbish running” – go to a scenic place, with a bin bag and run… You guessed it, every bit of trash I see gets put in the bag. Hey presto! Clean paths and playparks, good feelings and fitness for me… I see this as a movement I’m starting… Care to join
Thor.
