Unpaid Tax Bill of Amazonian Proportions

Accusation

Our Lord and Master Alex Salmond brokered, what he’s dubbed, a “fantastic deal” with online sales giant Amazon by providing substantial government handouts to set up a distribution centre in Dunfermline, alongside its customer call centre in Edinburgh!

However, and here’s the rub, Amazon has paid no corporation tax in the UK!  Would you credit it, well Big ‘Eck obviously has to the tune of  more than £10 million in government subsidies for Amazon!

Amazon is under investigation in the UK for its tax affairs, with the firm transferring the ownership of the main Amazon.co.uk business to a Luxembourg company – a legal arrangement it admits hands it a “favourable effective tax rate”.

Recommendation

Ensure that Westminster never hand Holyrood the power to set corporation tax whilst SNP are in power.

Lobby for government to support indigenous Scottish firms as a priority.

Press Big ‘Eck to answer the question  “Is a company with sales figures of £3.3 billion last year, that has avoided paying corporation in the UK for three years, the sort of company the SNP wants in an independent Scotland?”

Introduce a robust due diligence process for all potential inward investment.

A MASSIVE #skelptarse for Alex Salmond for not seeing beyond what he claims to be a “very positive impact”  with the creation of  up to 2,000 jobs full and part-time jobs –  Not if the tax bill isn’t paid DOH!

Representation

I can’t see how Big ‘Eck’s going to get away with using public money to grab headlines, but then what’s new? Let’s hear your side of the story Alex!

  • Considering this practise is commonplace and legal amongst many corporations around the globe, and whilst it isn’t fair, I don’t see why SNP ‘finger-pointing’ is justified when Westminster allow it to happen too.

    • Its cos the SNP are the government. Duh! 3 skelps for that one!

  • So because Westminster cannot collect corporation tax, the SNP government should not be allowed to set it?
And because Westminster cannot collect corporation tax, Salmond should not try to generate jobs in Scotland?
And, in case it had slipped you notice, Scotland is not yet an independent country.

  • Big Eck can always outdo himself – what about the 26 million being lost in tax exemption by unifying the Police and Fire services into singular bodies? – maybe he wants Skintland to become a reality!

What is Skelpt Arse?

To use a splendid bit of sadly, now seldom-used Scottish vernacular, whose 'arse' definitely needs 'skelpt'?

Who or what has been letting you down, letting our magnificent country down or who generally needs brought into line. Politicians? Overly politically-correct-mandarins? Jobsworth civil-servants? Service industry specialists who've not been servicing? You tell us!

We've got a sliding scale of 'skelpitness' from a light smack or a pure, red, stinger? You decide!
